Ken, our oldest playing member, has celebrated his 90th Birthday with a game of golf!
What else?
Ken tells us that he started playing golf at the old Burnie Golf Club which was situated where the old Drive in Theatre was at Somerset. Whilst looking for a little longer and challenging course he decided to go to the Wynyard Golf course where in his words: "We were made very welcome and invited to join in all the competitions".
This was about 1948 he recalls and the bridge across the Inglis River did not exist in those days so he had to go by boat that operated from the Wynyard Wharf to get to the course.
In those days the Wynyard Golf Club had its clubhouse above the present 7th tee bed and it was just weatherboard building.
Ken remembers people like Phil Lewis, Bob Dixon, Viv Webberly and Alan Turner and over the years his golf improved and he played in Division One pennant Teams for many years.
His lowest playing handicap was 3
He managed to win a club Championship from David Dixon many years ago and won a couple of Championships at Greens Beach as well. It was there that son John and daughter Wendy and even wife Elaine played many years of golf before we all joined Wynyard Golf Club. Since then of course Craig and Alister joined the Wynyard Golf Club as well and at the present time he tells us that they have 21 holes In one!
Ken has 8 but tells us that he also duffed his first shot of the tee at Greens Beach but proceeded to put his second off the tee into the hole so he reckons he had 8 and a half holes in one.
Well, we reckon he had enough time to archive all of that! Ken still inspires many younger golfer in the district with his perfect drives his temprament and his friendly manner.
